Ocean City, Maryland and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware are about half an hour apart and draw from the same crowd — DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia. People pick between them every summer, usually on the wrong criteria.

Scale is the other big difference

Ocean City is much larger. The boardwalk runs nearly three miles from the inlet up to 27th Street, loaded with shops, restaurants, rides and amusements. Behind it sits ten miles of beach.

That length matters more than people expect. Ocean City gets extremely busy near the boardwalk in July, but north of Midtown the crowds spread out and the same town feels calm. You can choose your density.

Rehoboth is compact by comparison — a smaller beach area and a much shorter boardwalk. In peak season that concentration shows: the boardwalk and beach get genuinely crowded, with fewer places to escape to.

The flip side is walkability. Rehoboth's downtown is small enough to cover on foot, and it is a nicer town to wander than Ocean City's boardwalk strip.

Food and atmosphere

Rehoboth has the stronger restaurant scene by a clear margin — this is a town people drive to for dinner. It also has a well-established, welcoming character and a walkable centre that feels like a place rather than a strip.

Ocean City has more of everything and better of less. Plenty of chain and boardwalk food, a large bar scene, and amusements the whole length of the boards. If you want a classic boardwalk evening with kids, Ocean City delivers it more completely.

  • You want good restaurants rather than boardwalk food

  • You prefer a walkable town to a resort strip
