How many weeks in a year? A calendar year holds 52 weeks and 1 day. Divide 365 days by 7 and you get 52.142857, so 52 full weeks leave one day over. In a leap year, 366 days give you 52 weeks and 2 days.
There's a second answer, though, and it's the one that catches people out. Under the international week-numbering standard, a year contains either 52 or 53 whole weeks, and 2026 is a 53-week year. How many weeks in a year: the arithmetic
Seven days times 52 weeks is 364. A common year is 365 days, so one day is always left over. That spare day is why your birthday moves forward one weekday each year, and two after a leap year.

Leap years follow the rule written into RFC 3339: a year divisible by 4 is a leap year, unless it's divisible by 100 and not by 400. That's why 2000 was a leap year and 2100 will not be.
Why some years have 53 weeks
Ask how many weeks in a year a payroll system or a project plan uses and the answer changes, because those systems count numbered weeks rather than leftover days. The ISO 8601 week date, as summarized by the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory, sets the rules: "a week starts with Monday (day 1) and ends with Sunday (day 7)", and "week 01 of a year is by definition the first week that has the Thursday in this year". An ISO year therefore has 52 or 53 full weeks, never a fraction.
A year gets a 53rd week when it starts on a Thursday, or when it's a leap year starting on a Wednesday. The next ones are:
- 2020
- 2026, the year we're in
- 2032
- 2037
If you run weekly reports, 2026 gives you one more of them than 2025 did. Retailers and payroll teams plan around this, because a 53rd week adds a week of sales or a week of cost to the annual comparison.
How many weeks in a month, and why it isn't four
No month is exactly four weeks except February in a common year. Averaged across the year, a month holds 4.345 weeks: 365 days split over 12 months is 30.42 days, and that divided by 7 gives 4.345.

This is why a monthly budget built on "four weeks of pay" comes up short. Weekly earners get five paydays in some months, and the gap has to land somewhere.
Work weeks: the number that actually affects you
Ask how many weeks in a year you actually work and the number drops. Fifty-two weeks is the calendar; the working year is shorter, and here's how it breaks down for 2027, counting from a standard Monday to Friday schedule.

The Office of Personnel Management sets 11 federal holidays a year, and moves any that fall at a weekend: a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before, a Sunday holiday on the Monday after. 2027 is an odd one, because New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, so federal employees take Friday 31 December 2027 off. That puts 12 observed holidays inside the 2027 calendar year.
The vacation figure comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, whose March 2025 benefits data puts average paid vacation in private industry at 11 days after one year of service, 15 after five years, 18 after ten and 20 after twenty.
Why payroll sometimes gets 27 paychecks
Payroll answers how many weeks in a year with 52.175, and that fraction is why the paycheck count drifts. Weekly pay gives 52 checks. Biweekly pay gives 26, and 26 times 14 days is 364, one day short of a year. That missing day accumulates, and eventually a year swallows an extra payday.
OPM explains the effect plainly in its guidance on the 2,087-hour divisor: over the 28 years it takes for the calendar to repeat, a year averages 2,087 work hours, and "over a period of several years, employees can expect to experience 27 pay days in a calendar year". At 40 hours a week, 2,087 hours works out to 52.175 weeks of work.

Plenty of people searching how many weeks in a year actually want one of these instead.
- School year. If your district runs a 180-day year on five-day weeks, that's 36 school weeks, before snow days and teacher training days come out.
- Pregnancy. Forty weeks is about nine months and one week, not nine months, because a month averages 4.345 weeks.
- Six months. Half a common year is 182.5 days, or 26 weeks and half a day.
- A quarter. Thirteen weeks, which is why quarterly targets and 13-week cash flow forecasts line up so neatly.

Counting the weeks in your own span
How many weeks in a year is the easy case. For a span that isn't a whole year, count the days and divide by seven. From 24 September 2026 to 31 December 2026, for example, there are 98 days, which is exactly 14 weeks, and 66 of those days are working days once weekends and holidays come out.
