According to Audible's plan page:

• Standard, at $8.99 a month, lets you pick one audiobook a month from its collection. You can listen to your picks only while you're a member, and an unused pick doesn't carry over.

• Premium, at $14.95 a month, gives you one credit a month for any title. Books you buy with credits are yours to keep after you cancel, and Premium also includes the Plus Catalog, a rotating set of titles you can stream at no extra cost. Credits expire 12 months after they're issued, or when you cancel.

Audible Premium also comes as an annual plan, with 12 credits for $149.50 or 24 credits for $229.50, which works out to about $12.46 and $9.56 per credit. Both monthly plans start with a 30-day free trial, then renew automatically unless you cancel.

Audible fits heavy listeners who want to build a permanent library and who like getting one expensive new release per credit. The Standard plan is cheaper, but you lose access to your books if you stop paying.

Libro.fm: Audible's model with local bookstores

Libro.fm sells audiobooks the way Audible Premium does, with one credit a month for any title, and shares the revenue with an independent bookstore you choose. Its help center says credits never expire, members get 30% off extra purchases, and you can pause or cancel while keeping your books and unused credits. Some titles can't be bought with credits because of publisher restrictions.

The monthly membership is widely listed at $14.99. Libro.fm also launched an annual plan with 12 credits for $169.99, according to Publishers Weekly. Libro.fm suits listeners who want to own their books and would rather their money support a local shop than Amazon.

Everand: one subscription for books, audiobooks and more

Everand, from the company behind Scribd, used to offer unlimited reading and listening. It now uses unlocks. According to Everand's help center, Standard costs $11.99 a month for 1 unlock, Plus costs $16.99 for 3 unlocks, and Deluxe costs $28.99 for 5 unlocks. Every plan also includes a selection of titles you can open without an unlock, such as Everand Originals and podcasts. Unused unlocks roll over for up to six months.

Everand makes sense if you split your time between ebooks and audiobooks, since one unlock works for either format. The Plus plan's three unlocks for $16.99 is the lowest price per book among the paid options here, but unlocked titles aren't yours to keep.

If you listen to one or two books a month, try Libby first. If your library's waitlists are too long, Spotify's included hours cost nothing extra when you already have Premium.
