Estimated balance at 65
$1,493,400
About $530,730 in today's dollars
- Starting balance $25,000
- Your contributions $362,772
- Employer match $108,832
- Investment growth $996,796
This year (2026)
Your limit: $24,500
You put in $6,000 and your employer adds $1,800.
In a 457(b), employer contributions count toward the same annual limit as your own, so the match is reduced if the two together would go over it.
2026 IRS limits: $24,500 in deferrals, plus $8,000 catch-up from age 50 or $11,250 at ages 60 to 63. Future limits are estimated by growing them with inflation in $500 steps. This is an estimate, not financial advice.
About this tool
This 401k contribution calculator projects your retirement balance from your salary, the share you contribute, your employer match and your expected return. It works the same way as a 403b calculator or a 457 calculator: pick your plan and it applies that plan's rules. It uses the 2026 IRS limits of $24,500 in employee deferrals, plus an $8,000 catch-up from age 50 or $11,250 at ages 60 to 63. For a 457(b), employer contributions share the same limit as your own, so the calculator reduces the match when the two together would go over it. It also tells you if you're contributing less than you need for the full match, and shows your final balance in today's dollars so it's easier to picture.
How to use
Pick your plan: 401(k), 403(b) or 457(b). Enter your age, when you want to retire, your salary and your yearly raise. Add the percentage you contribute, your employer's match (for example, 50% up to 6% of salary) and your current balance. The result updates as you type, showing your balance at retirement, how much came from you, your employer and investment growth, and this year's contribution limit. Change the return and inflation to try out different scenarios.
